A new feature-length documentary will follow award-winning actor Tommy Jessop on his journey to create his own superhero movie, Tommy Goes to Hollywood (working title).

Actor and activist Tommy Jessop was born with Down Syndrome. Having always dreamed of having a leading role, Jessop felt his career was on the right path after starring in the fifth series of Line of Duty. Since then, however, further top roles have yet to materialise for Jessop, so he has decided to take the matter into his own hands.

The documentary sees Jessop, inspired by the advice of his agent, deciding to create his own dream role. Namely Roger, a superhero named after his teddy bear who has adventures inspired by Jessop’s own experience with Down Syndrome. This documentary will follow Jessop and his brother, filmmaker Will Jessop, forming the movie idea, enlisting top talent, and developing a killer movie pitch, before travelling to Hollywood.

The Jessop brothers last collaborated in 2014 on the documentary Growing up Downs for BBC Three. Tommy Goes to Hollywood promises to be as much about family relationships as it is about chasing dreams of superhero stardom.

Tommy says: “Making this documentary really has been an amazing adventure and a once-in-a-lifetime dream come true. It truly has been wicked having a camera and being able to tell my own story for the first time.

"Some of my personal highlights might include going to Hollywood with my brother Will, meeting A-list actors, pitching my own movie called Roger the Superhero, and having Tom Cruise cake. I give it 10 out of 10, and I do hope you will enjoy watching it.”

Tommy Goes to Hollywood currently has no confirmed release date but it will air on BBC Two and iPlayer.
