Scott Pilgrim, the hero of Bryan Lee O'Malley's cult classic graphic novels, is hitting Netflix in anime form to take on the world again.
The 2010 live action film Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, directed by Edgar Wright of 'Three Flavours Cornetto' fame, also won a cult following, both for Wright's typically kinetic and frenetic touch which borrowed from video games, manga and martial arts movies, and its all-star cast.
As announced in March 2023, the stars are aligning again to voice their same characters in the new anime, entitled Scott Pilgrim Takes Off.
This includes Michael Cera as the 23-year-old bass player of Sex Bob-Omb Scott Pilgrim, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Ramona Flowers, Satya Bhabha as Matthew Patel, Kieran Culkin as Wallace Wells, Chris Evans as Lucas Lee, Anna Kendrick as Stacey Pilgrim, Brie Larson as Envy Adams, Alison Pill as Kim Pine, Aubrey Plaza as Julie Powers and Jason Schwartzman as Gideon Graves.
The cast reuniting was music to O'Malley's ears. "They’ve all gone on to do incredible things, but to me, they’re family,” he told Tudum at the time. "There — to this day — is still a group email with the entire cast on it that’s been going since 2010. I was happy to be able to reach out to everyone with the news that we had finally come up with a way to continue the adventure. Seeing (and hearing) everyone come back to their roles has been a true pleasure."
Back in March, Wright praised O'Malley, who has written the new series, for having "an idea that was way more adventurous than just a straight adaptation of the books."
The universe, then, looks set to expand, but Netflix has confirmed that the story will again follow the title character as he falls in love with New Yorker Ramona Flowers, only to realise that, in order to date her, he must defeat all seven of her evil exes.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off premieres on Netflix on 17 November 2023.
