Channel 4 will follow three spirited OAP couples who are planning to marry, in a new documentary charting the rise of weddings among the elderly.

I Do at 92 is a one-off documentary made by Transparent Television that looks at the excitement and challenges of getting married in old age.

According to the National Office of Statistics, in 2015 the number of grooms in their late sixties increased by 25%, while brides of the same age went up by 21%.

I Do at 92 is a poignant and heart-warming first cut film which delves into the lives of those whom despite their age, aren’t quite ready to give up on love,” said commissioning editor Rita Daniels. “It’s both uplifting and touching and proves that age is no barrier when on a quest to find that special person.”

Meet the couples

At the age of 76, bingo caller Derek has not given up on finding The One, despite two failed marriages and a troubled love life. He met his betrothed, former beauty queen Carolyn, at the bingo club, but took 18 years to muster up the courage to ask her out. Not wanting to put love off any longer, he proposed on their second date, and was delighted when she accepted. However, he has a dark secret that he must share with his fiancée before they can tie the knot.

94-year-old Georgina was devastated when her beloved husband of 57 years, Cliff, died and thought she would never find love again. “You never know what life will send you,” she says, after she met retired chef Raymond, 86, at her care home in Surrey. Six months after Georgina first asked Raymond to join her for dinner, they got engaged. The couple hope to have at least a couple of years together, but know their marriage could be short-lived as Raymond has terminal cancer.

Great-grandmother Margaret, 81, took the initiative and turned to internet dating to find love. She fell for Victor, 77, instantly, and ignored her granddaughter’s advice not to take him home on their first date. Victor hopes that this marriage will be a second chance to be a family man, after making mistakes in the past. Margaret had a difficult first marriage, which ended in divorce, and spent much of her life struggling to make ends meet. Now she and Victor are pooling their life savings in order to have their dream wedding.
