A new mini-series of Mrs. Brown’s Boys has been commissioned for BBC One, after a decade of the titular Irish “mammy” being off our screens.
The sitcom, fronted by Brendan O’Carroll (All Round to Mrs Brown’s), saw runaway success due to its unusual fourth wall-breaking comedy style.
Although the series itself ran for only 3 series between 2011 and 2013, Agatha Brown and her collection of family and friends have made their return every year for Christmas specials, which the BBC has commissioned up to 2026.
O’Carroll said: “This mini-series was actually planned for 2021. Having been thwarted twice, firstly by Covid-19 and then by a post Covid shortage of studios, it’s fantastic to, at last, have the chance to make it happen. Fasten your seatbelts and hold onto your hats.”
The cast, who are made up of O’Carroll’s real-life family and friends, are all expected to return. This excludes Rory Cowan who departed from the franchise in 2017, taking his character of Rory Brown with him. Similarly, the character of Dino Doyle has also been retired, as Gary Hollywood (Take the High Road) will not be returning to the franchise.
Filming is anticipated to begin in spring, with the four-part mini-series to begin transmission later in 2023 on BBC One.
All previous episodes of Mrs Brown’s Boys are available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
