Joe Lycett will battle David Beckham in a Christmas special of Joe Lycett's Got Your Back, Channel 4 has announced today on Twitter.
Joe Lycett vs David Beckham: A Got Your Back Christmas Special will see the comedian ask one of football's global icons to stand up for what they believe in.
The announcement comes after Lycett's latest headline-making protest, in which he called on the former England footballer to renounce his role as an ambassador for the Qatar World Cup.
Citing the country's criminalisation of homosexuality, he asked Beckham to end his relationship with Qatar in return for a £10,000 donation to LGBTQ+ charities. If not, he threatened he would shred the entire amount in a week's time.
Beckham never responded, and so on Sunday 20 November, Lycett livestreamed himself destroying the money.
The next day, however, he confirmed he had actually donated the money to charity and that the shredded cash was fake. "It was an empty threat designed to get people talking," he said in a video post to his Instagram, in which he also shredded Beckham's historic cover of attitude magazine (the first ever cover of a gay magazine with a Premier League footballer on it).
Joe Lycett's Got Your Back has seen the comedian investigate and champion consumer rights, battling petty officials and dodgy scammers in a quest for justice. David Beckham will no doubt be one of his biggest targets yet.
The Christmas special will air on Thursday 15 December at 9pm on Channel 4.
