The classic war film Das Boot is getting a sequel on Sky Atlantic in Autumn 2018.

The original film followed the high-pressure and claustrophobic existence of the crew of a WWII U-boat.

The eight-part drama follows on from the events of the 1981 hit, which was based on a best-selling novel by Lothar-Gunter Buchheim, and boasts an stellar cast including Masters of Sex actor Lizzy Caplan and  August Wittgenstein (The Crown, Angels and Demons).

The series is a co-production with Bavaria Fernsehproduktion, Sky Deutschland and Sonar Entertainment, and will air across all five of Sky’s European territories including the UK, Germany, and Italy.

The show joins a slate of other recent Sky Original commissions including Babylon Berlin, The New Pope and Riviera.

Ahead of filming – which begins in La Rochelle, Prague, Malta and Munich in August – Jenna Santoianni of Sonar Entertainment praised the “tremendous writing, acclaimed international cast and crew, and stunning locations” of the new series.
