Entertainment series Scared of the Dark has been commissioned for Channel 4.
There are around 10 million people in the UK scared of the dark, a phobia known as Nyctophobia. Channel 4 will team up with a group of celebrities to see if they can control their primal fears and bond as a group without the normal social cues.
The six-part series will follow famous faces as they enter a pitch-black reality space for seven days, living in complete darkness and managing the challenges of light deprivation.
The celebs will need to learn how to perform daily tasks and take part in challenges designed to help them overcome their fear of darkness and improve their ability to thrive In darkness.
Those that fail to pass the challenges will need to take on mammoth tasks to stay in the show. In the end, there can only be one winner who will get to step out into the light.
Head of Live Events at Channel 4, Tom Beck, commented: “Funny, frightening and totally unexpected, this idea really jumped out at us – much like we’ll be jumping out and surprising a load of terrified celebrities. The show promises an enticing mix of reality, entertainment and experiment and I can’t wait to turn the lights off and get started.”
