Apple TV+ has released the trailer for Roma and Gravity director Alfonso Cuarón’s debut series Disclaimer, starring Cate Blanchett as a journalist in peril.

In 2024, Catherine Ravenscroft (Blanchett) is a journalist at the height of her career – even receiving a coveted Royal Television Society Journalism award – before the novelisation of her past arrives and her achievements crumble around her.

The mysterious novel’s author is ‘unknown,’ but knows Ravenscroft’s most valuable secrets. A series of 2001 flashbacks, with Leila George (Mortal Engines) playing the young Ravenscroft, reveal a long-past relationship with a tragic end for her lover Jonathan (Louis Partridge, Enola Holmes).

The trailer gives a strong hint towards the author of the novel, showing Kevin Kline (A Fish Called Wanda) as Jonathan’s father, looking at the dedication: “to my son, Jonathan”, with the voiceover: “she needed to suffer… as I had.” Ravenscroft upheaves her relationship with her husband Robert (Sacha Baron Cohen, Borat) and son Nicholas (Kodi Smit-McPhee, Alpha) in the process of trying to keep the narrative of Jonathan's father undercover.

Disclaimer is an adaption of Renée Knight’s debut novel of the same name. Like her protagonist, Knight is an RTS award winner, having received a Television Journalism award in 1992 before becoming a novelist.

The series score has been composed by Finneas O’Connell, best known as the co-producer and writer of his sister Billie Eilish’s music.

Disclaimer will be released on Apple TV+ Friday 11 October 2024.
