Apple TV +’s feminist period drama The Buccaneers has announced Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester will join the cast for series two.
With Edith Warton’s final unfinished novel as it’s source material, The Buccaneers follows a group of new money American girls sent by their guardians to debut in London society. The culture clash is evident in all the ways you’d expect, the Americans are considered inelegant, until some of the Brits realise a stiff upper lip isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.
Kristine Froseth (The Society) leads the cast as Nan St George, who enters the second series as a duchess after marrying above her status – but only so her status can protect her fellow Buccaneers. Her love triangle with the Duke (Guy Remmers in his TV debut) and his friend Guy (Matthew Broome also in his debut) continues. Nan’s sister Jinny (Imogen Waterhouse, The Outpost) escaped at the close of series one, after her abusive new husband discovers her pregnancy, catapulting her to unwanted fame.
Although it is as yet undisclosed what role Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester will play, Apple TV+'s social media announcement showed the cast greeting Meester on the set, with her in similar costume to the Buccaneers.
The cast Meester will be joining include Alisha Boe (13 Reasons Why), Josh Dylan (Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again), Aubri Ibrag (Dive Club), Mia Threapleton (I Am Ruth), Josie Totah (Saved by the Bell), Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) and Barney Fishwick in his television debut.
Series two of The Buccaneers does not currently have a release date, but it will air on Apple TV+.
