Netflix has released a full-length trailer for Ripley, starring Andrew Scott (All Of Us Strangers).
The limited series will adapt the 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith, made famous by the 1999 film of the same name.
Last time round, it was Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting) who played Ripley. The conman scams and squirms his way into the affluent world of Dickie Greenleaf, played in 1999 by Jude Law (The Grand Budapest Hotel). Now, it’s Andrew Scott’s turn as the scheming charmer, with Johnny Flynn (One Life) in the role of Dickie.
Dakota Fanning (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood) is Marge Sherwood, previously played by Gwyneth Paltrow (The Politician).
Where the film made much of its Mediterranean colour palette, the limited series plunges the viewer into a world of black and white. As a result, every shot in the trailer is arresting: the stark use of contrast makes Ripley’s stares more sinister, Marge’s more desperate.
Combined with exact, geometric shot composition, there is a feeling of being trapped, even in the most beautiful parts of the world. As Ripley does his best to evade law enforcement, the claustrophobia only builds.
Ripley is released on Netflix on 4 April.
