The BBC has commissioned a new comedy drama from the disabled activist Kyla Harris.
We Might Regret This, which places intense female friendships at the centre of the drama, stars Harris as artist Freya.
Freya is in her 30s, she’s tetraplegic, and she’s moved to London from Canada in pursuit of a lawyer in his 50s named Abe (Darren Boyd). As their romance hits full-tilt, Abe invites Freya to move in with him before she’s even seen the upstairs of his house.
The new couple require a personal assistant due to Freya’s disability, which means they have a fly on the wall for all the arguments and steamy make-ups that come with the beginning of a relationship. After being unable to find someone fit for this overly involved role, her impulsive best friend Jo (Elena Saurel) decides to take the job.
The comedy is based on the lives of its creators Lee Getty and Kyla Harris. Harris took on her close friend as her PA during lockdown and began documenting their experiences on a YouTube series called It’s Personal.
Joining Kyla Harris, Darren Boyd (The Outlaws) and Elena Saurel (Buffering) in starring roles are Sally Phillips (Miranda), Hugh Coles (Defending the Guilty), and Aasiya Shah (Bloods).
The drama will be produced by Roughcut TV, the producers of hit comedies Big Boys, People Just Do Nothing and Stath Lets Flats.
Kyla Harris and Lee Getty say: “We are thrilled that Roughcut TV, the BBC and Village Roadshow Television feel that our messiest and most joyous lived experiences of friendship, love and disability can amuse audiences. And here we just thought they were bad decisions.”
Executive Producer and Creative Director, Roughcut TV, Alex Smith says: “Roughcut is so excited to produce We Might Regret This for the BBC and Village Roadshow Television. There’s a unique and highly authored show here, which will engage comedy and drama lovers like nothing before. A production bursting with talent in front and behind the camera, we know we WON'T regret this.”
