The BBC is to air a new drama following the earlier years of John Rebus, the detective who stars in Ian Rankin’s novels.
The book series began in 1987, with Knots & Crosses, and has since been adapted for screen, stage and radio.
The new six-part series takes place during Rebus’s days as a Detective Sergeant in Edinburgh. When his veteran brother Michael turns criminal, John finds his loyalty torn between family and the law.
Produced by Eleventh Hour Films for Swedish streaming service Viaplay, the show was filmed across Edinburgh and Glasgow in 2023.
Richard Rankin (Outlander) plays Rebus. He is joined by Lucie Shorthouse (Line of Duty), Amy Manson (The Diplomat), Thoren Ferguson (The Midwich Cuckoos) and Stuart Bowman (The Serpent). Also in the cast are Brian Ferguson (The Ipcress File), Neshla Caplan (The Rig), Michelle Duncan (Elizabeth is Missing) and Noof Ousellam (Vigil).

Rebus will air in the UK in Spring 2024, on BBC Scotland and BBC One, and will also be available on BBC iPlayer.
