Channel 4 has commissioned a new one-off documentary about the recent weight loss phenomenon known as the 'slimming jab', presented by Anna Richardson.
Slimming jabs have made headlines after producing 'miracle' results in clinical trials, but some suspect all the hype and celebrity endorsement to be not just overblown, but actively dangerous.
As the NHS' approval has cleared the way for their introduction to high-street chemists, Richardson is therefore setting out to find the truth behind these drugs, Semaglutide and Liraglutide, also known as Wegovy and Ozempic.
They were originally developed to treat type 2 diabetes, but are now being considered as potential treatments for obesity. As well as consulting leading industry experts, Richardson will meet some of the real people already using the jab.
Beyond exploring the risks and rewards, and whether the risks are being communicated as effectively as the rewards, Richardson will also question if the drugs are open to abuse by those accessing them through private health care, and if social media is only exacerbating the frenzy.
Clemency Green, Senior Commissioning Editor for Channel 4 Daytime & Features said: “Regular users of social media will have been bombarded with people talking about the 'magic' effects of the slimming jab.
"This documentary promises to deliver an enlightening exploration of this so-called 'magic' jab, backed by rigorous research, medical expertise, and compelling personal anecdotes.
"The show will investigate whether this medicine really could be the answer to obesity, saving the NHS millions, or if we should all be more cautious of quick fixes.”
