The script department plan, develop, write and edit the narrative of a television production. Writing is a key part of the job, but there are many other aspects and skills involved in script jobs.

Duties include
- Creative writing and logistical writing including assessment of themes, setting, characters, dialogue, format, structure, narrative
- Script editing
- Reading a large quantity of scripts
- Keeping up to date of script changes and developments, noting any issues with continuity
- Handle admin duties including all production paperwork with efficiency, accuracy and while maintaining confidentially
- Assist actors going through dialogue and note any changes
- Ensure the smooth running of the project
- Provide logistical and production support
- Work to the specifications set out by the producers and production managers of the show
Skills needed
- Able to read in large quantities
- Verbal and written communication skills
- Keen attention to detail and analytical skills
- Organisational skills
- Work well in a team
- Have an understanding of editorial guidelines
- Able to work in pressured environments with tight deadlines
- Able to use editorial judgement and share and develop ideas
- Strong knowledge of different genres, character development, plot devices, dialogue and style within TV
- Understanding of screenplay format and layout, including the development process
