The Green Planet

BBC Studios and PBS: A marriage built to last

In television, co-production deals come and go. Sometimes they turn sour as the conflicting demands of both parties lead to endless compromise or messy divorces. One of the most enduring - and productive - is the little-heralded partnership signed 10 years ago between BBC Studios and US public broadcaster PBS.

The Green Planet wins big at the RTS West of England Awards 2023

The four-part BBC One series took home four prizes: Natural History, Cinematography, Editing and Sound.

Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, The Green Planet explores the fascinating and often bizarre world of plants. It was hailed by the judges as “ground-breaking, innovative and brilliant – an important story about our world in these times of great change”.

Two programmes notched awards two years’ running. The second series of Stephen Merchant’s BBC One comedy thriller The Outlaws won in the Scripted category, repeating its triumph last year.

The five-part series from BBC Studios Natural History Unit has been described by executive producer Mike Gunton as “Planet Earth for plants!”

The Green Planet will offer an unseen look into the inter-connected and surprising behaviour of the plant world, where unlikely heroes and emotional stories emerge.

Attenborough will discover plants that can outlive civilisations, and others that could cover the Earth in a matter of months with their ferocious breeding patterns.
