Tony Hall

Director-General, BBC

Tony Hall is one of the key figures in the UK’s media and arts industry.

As Director-General, he is the BBC’s editorial, operational and creative leader.  He oversees all the BBC’s services across the UK and around the world, both public service and commercial.

He joined the BBC as a news trainee in 1973, and after a 20-year career as a senior journalist and editor, he became Chief Executive of BBC News and Current Affairs.   In 2001 he left the Corporation to become Chief Executive of the Royal Opera House.

Tony re-joined the BBC in 2013 as its 16th Director-General.

In 2009 he joined the London Organising Committee for the Olympic Games and became Chair of the Cultural Olympiad Board. He’s currently a Trustee of The Paul Hamlyn Foundation and sits on the Board of 14-18 NOW.

He was awarded a CBE in 2006 and was made a life peer in 2010. He sits on the crossbenches in the House of Lords.
