Phil is Chair of the RTS London Centre. He previously chaired the London Centre’s Marcoms committee, and was a prime mover in creating and producing the RTS London Student Awards with Centre Chair Terry Marsh.
Phil joined the RTS in 1995 while living and working in Plymouth, where he served as Honorary Secretary of the Devon and Cornwall Centre under the late Roger Gage, and subsequently became Chair himself.
Phil’s interest in television was sparked by the occasional peeks behind the scenes on shows such as TISWAS and the Multi-coloured Swap Shop, and it was Bob Godfrey’s Do-It Yourself Film Animation Show which inspired him to start making 8mm films with a wind-up camera.
As a teenager he volunteered at Swindon Viewpoint, his local community cable tv station, and in a world of U-matic tapes and portapaks, he produced a series of satirical children’s programmes with a group of school friends.
After studying – and setting up the student tv station – at Warwick University, he joined one of the UK’s first satellite tv stations, Super Channel. Since, he has worked at BSB, Westcountry Television, Carlton, Flextech and Disney.
Phil has lectured at Plymouth Marjon University and the University of Coventry, and is currently writing his first book.
