Chris Banatvala is an independent media consultant with almost 30 years' experience in the industry as a Board member, expert adviser, senior manager and broadcast journalist.
He now advises broadcasters, tech companies, international regulators and governments on regulation, content standards and communications policy. In the UK, he works with among others, the BBC, Channel 4, WarnerMedia, Discovery Inc. and Global Media Entertainment as well as a number of law firms. Abroad, Chris has advised governments and regulators in regions where they are trying to develop freedom of expression within a regulatory framework (eg Thailand and Pakistan).
Chris was Ofcom's founding Director of Standards, leading on the policy development and enforcement of standards in linear and non-linear content. He was also an executive member of Ofcom's Content Board. He started his career at ITN, working on a variety of programmes, before becoming Channel 4 News’ senior political producer.
Chris is currently a member of the Sky News Board and Channel 4’s online ombudsman. In the past few years, he has conducted a number of high-profile reviews and inquiries for national and international broadcasters.
