The four-part series will see Leith trade in cake for compost, as she parts with her home and lovingly manicured garden of nearly 50 years to move in with her husband John Playfair. 

However, she has a two-acre sized problem in the form of the overgrown garden around the new modern barn that she and Playfair have designed. 

Strewn with rubbish, rubble, rusting buildings and overgrown vegetation, there is little of a garden left. 

For green-fingered Leith, her garden has acted as a sanctuary and saviour of her sanity, and it remains top of her priority list, even above the house. 

Desperate to have a garden filled with life and colour in less than a year, Leith gets serious and seeks inspiration from some of the most beautiful private gardens in the country. 

Through the seasons Leith designs, digs and plants her ultimate garden, and offers easy tips to help viewers create manageable and magnificent gardens themselves. 

Prue Leith commented: “I’m no Monty Don but I’ve been gardening for 45 years and just love it. But this garden has to be manageable by a pair of oldies none too keen on kneeling, bending or humping heavy gear. 

“So, it’s a robot for the lawn, troughs for the veg, and pots on the terrace. And a fair few disasters!”

Prue’s Great Garden Plot will air on Channel 4 later this year.
