Based on the novel by Celeste Ng, single mother Mia Warren (Kerry Washington) is an artist who moves to Shaker Heights with her daughter and they become the tenants of the picture-perfect Richardson family, fronted by matriarch Elena Richardson (Reese Witherspoon).
With such different views of the world, the two families are put under the microscope when uncomfortable truths come to light and battle lines are drawn.

The story of the family is told through the present when Kevin, Kate and Randall are 36. Through flashbacks to several different times, the series creates a picture of a tight-knit family and the wins and losses they go through.
Kevin and Kate are the surviving twins from Rebecca’s triplet pregnancy, with their brother Kyle stillborn, on the same day Randall was born and abandoned at a fire station. Rebecca and Jack decide to adopt him, believing he was meant to be in their lives.
As adults, Randall has a successful career and loving family but he feels like something is missing as he searches for his black biological parents, Kate is struggling to accept love into her life as she battles with obesity, and Kevin is an actor looking to find more meaning in his life.
