What happened in series one?

Series one introduced journalist Tony (Ricky Gervais), a man whose life is turned upside down when his wife Lisa (Kerry Godliman) dies from breast cancer.

Overtaken by grief and unable to move on, Tony considers suicide but instead decides to live a life doing and saying whatever he wants, regardless of who he offends.

Talking to his therapist, he remarks that a good day for him is "when he doesn’t want to shoot random strangers and then turn the gun on himself”.

Seeing his newfound apathy for life as a superpower, Tony soon finds that although he has given up on everyone around him, they haven’t given up on him.

At the end of series one, Tony starts to recognise those who have stood by him and begins to open up to the possibility of living again.

What can we expect for series two?

Series two sees Tony still struggling to adjust, but he decides he wants to give back to the people who have helped him cope.

This sees him play cupid between his postman Pat (Joe Wilkinson) and sex worker Daphne (Roisin Conaty) and even try yoga, but there are still plenty of swear words and scathing put-downs.

Which cast members will be returning?

The main cast of series one returns including fellow widower Anne (Penelope Wilton), who once again provides life-affirming emotional support and comfort.

Ashley Jensen returns as nurse Emma, with whom Tony has a romantic spark, Tom Basden plays Matt Tony’s brother-in-law and boss, Diane Morgan plays colleague Kath, Mandeep Dhillon plays trainee journalist Sandy, David Bradley plays Tony’s dad Ray who is suffering with dementia and Paul Kaye plays Tony’s psychiatrist.

When does it start?

Series two of After Life begins streaming on Netflix on the 24^th April 2020.

Although Gervais is known for following the format of two series and a special, he has said that he would like to do a third series of After Life. Watch this space.
