The six-part series focuses on a trial that grips the nation and is at the centre of a media storm, putting a harsh spotlight on the victim, the accused and both their families.

The trial explores the disappearance of Hannah Ellis, a hard-working student and daughter of a single mum.

Following her disappearance, Talitha Campbell, an arrogant daughter of a wealthy entrepreneur, is arrested and charged as the perpetrator.

Showtrial follows the case from Campbell’s arrest to the jury’s final verdict, as the prosecution and defence fight to present their version of events. 

Has Campbell been falsely accused or is she a callous murderer?

The series looks at how wealth, politics and prejudice can manipulate the path to justice.  

“The right to a fair trial and the idea of reasonable doubt lie at the heart of a civilised society,” said creator and writer Ben Richards,

He added: “Showtrial explores how they can be distorted by other factors, in a world where concepts such as fairness, doubt and reason are afforded such diminishing value.”

Piers Wenger, controller of BBC drama, praised Richards on his powers as “an independent thinker” and “innovative storyteller”.

He said: “Rich in character and truly contemporary, Showtrial follows the investigation of a serious crime as it grows from routine investigation to national talking point, charting the progress of the case and the mounting pressure on those on the inside.”

Showtrial will air on BBC One, with casting and further details to be announced at a later date.
