Emerging talent to be honoured in two new industry awards
The Royal Television Society in Wales today announced its new look annual awards that will celebrate student filmmakers and also, for the first time, young professionals already working in the TV industry in Wales.
The RTS Cymru Awards 2019 (previously the RTS Wales Student Awards) will be held on February 6th next year at the University of South Wales’ Atrium building in Cardiff.
For 2019 the awards are being extended to include two new industry categories aimed at new entrants:
- Industry Newcomer Award
- Industry Breakthrough Award
Nominated by employers, both awards are intended to recognise and reward rising new talent. The Newcomer Award is for new Welsh entrants to the television industry, specifically those who are in their first paid role, while the Industry Breakthrough Award is for those who have progressed a little further, and have a minimum of two years’ experience of working in the TV industry and have achieved at least one on-screen credit.
In both categories, nominees can be working in any aspect of the behind-the camera production process, including development, research, production management and all craft roles.
Judith Winnan, Chair of RTS Wales, said: “We’re delighted to be extending our educational role of promoting young Welsh talent by introducing two industry-focused awards to go alongside our established student honours.
“We hope the new look RTS Cymru Awards will become an even more prominent fixture in the media calendar, as we provide a springboard for the next generation of programme-makers and craft professionals, whose burgeoning expertise will benefit our industry for many years to come."
The two new awards reinforce a long-standing commitment by RTS Wales to recognise emerging talent in the student population. Now in their 24th year, the Student Awards recognise the best audio-visual work created by students attending higher education institutions and, for the first time, further education courses in Wales.
The award categories are: Animation; Comedy & Entertainment; Drama; Factual; News; and Short Form.
The judging panel for both the Industry Awards and the Student Awards will be made up of senior professionals from the main broadcasters, the independent television production sector, and from the higher and further education sectors.
As in previous years, the winners of each student category will go forward to compete in the UK-national RTS Student Television Awards in London on 28th June 2019.
The closing date for Student entries is 26 October 2018.
The closing date for the Industry Newcomer and Industry Breakthrough Awards is
14 January 2019.
Industry nominations for the two new awards should be sent to awardsentry.rts.org.uk/entrant.
