Welcome to the Royal Television Society, an educational charity promoting the art and science of television.
From glamorous award ceremonies to lively debates, the RTS embraces all aspects of television, and is open to anyone with an interest in the medium. Membership starts at £75 a year, and includes a range of benefits.
As an educational charity, we encourage and celebrate work in television and its related fields, from finding out how the nation’s favourite shows are made in our Anatomy of a Hit series, to celebrating burgeoning talent at our annual Student Television Awards.
The industry’s most talented individuals give us an insight into the work that goes into making cutting edge contemporary TV. From Government ministers and CEOs to workshops with great runners, our events look at every part of the business.
Our annual Television Journalism, Programme, Craft and Design and Student Television Awards celebrate achievements across the broadcasting industry.
Each year, we offer Television Production and Technology bursaries to help those from less affluent backgrounds get a foothold in the industry, and Masterclass sessions bring together students, academics and industry heads. Since the first RTS Bursary Scheme was launched in 2013, we have supported nearly 350 students from lower-in-come backgrounds, with 82% of graduates securing employment within TV and related industries.
Global television leaders gather to discuss what the future holds for television at our RTS Cambridge and London Conventions.
Alongside our engaged community of over 4000 full members, the Society is supported by UK and global broadcasters, producers and consultants, including Principal Patrons BBC, Sky, Channel 4 and ITV. See all of our patrons here.
Originally founded as the Television Society in 1927, the Society was granted its Royal title in 1966 and His Majesty King Charles III became Patron of the RTS in 1997.
Today, 14 regional and national groups curate lively events and awards around the UK and Ireland, from Glasgow to Galway.

RTS Futures
RTS Futures, which is aimed at those in their first two years of employment, organises an exciting roster of discussion, training and social occasions. Our annual Careers Fair brings together new entrants and the industry's biggest employers, while other recent events have included a masterclass on scriptwriting, a tour of the BT Sport studio and guidance on how to work on observational documentaries.
RTS Public Lectures
The RTS Public Lectures are a series of talks by eminent figures, not only in television, but across the scientific, political and journalistic industries. Held across the country and around the world, these informed and diverse lectures offer RTS members and the public a real insight into vital and game-changing developments effecting the television industry.
