The eight-part drama, the name of which translates as Duty/Shame, is set across London and Tokyo, traversing multiple timeframes, and brings together a stellar cast of Japanese talent and British TV and film actors.

The intricate thriller examines the butterfly effect of a single murder across two cities. Kenzo (Takehiro Hira), a Tokyo detective, is dispatched by his bosses to London to hunt down his estranged younger brother, Yuto (Yosuke Kubosuka) in an effort to maintain the famiy's honour. However on arrival he is rapidly pulled into the shady world of Abbot (Charlie Creed-Miles – Peaky Blinders) and Vickers (Justin Long – Live Free or Die Hard) whose longstanding and lucrative business arrangement is crumbling as Abbot looks to the East for new opportunities.

Thousands of miles from home, Kenzo unexpectedly finds a new makeshift family in remarkable bunch of Londoners. Among them is charismatic rent boy Rodney (Will Sharpe – Flowers) and Met detective Sarah (Kelly Macdonald – Boardwalk Empire), who is investigating the London murder but who begins to present a threat to Kenzo’s own family life.

BBC Drama Controller Piers Wenger promises a drama "unlike anything we've ever seen before on British TV. Its unique blend of suspense, pathos and wit is a testament to [writer] Joe Barton’s astonishing imagination and talent."

The show plays out in both Japanese and English. RTS winner Julian Farino will direct the series from Sister Pictures. 

Filming has begun on Giri/Haji which will air on BBC Two in the UK, and Netflix around the world.
