Netflix has announced it is to film its first ever original series in Spain.
Although Netflix only launched in Spain in October 2015, the streaming service has announced its first ever original series filmed in the country, which will be available internationally.
The Spanish-language drama will be set in the 1920s and focus on four women from very different backgrounds who work as switchboard operators at Spain’s only television company in Madrid.
The show, which is currently untitled, will offer an insight into the changing technological and social landscape of that time in a region that is often underexplored in global television.
Produced by Bambu Productions, a production house known for its historical dramas, the show promises to be an intense and wide-ranging emotional experience.
The company are also leading Spain’s recent explosion into the international TV export market by marking shows which Bambu founder Ramon Campos describes as melding “telenovela Melodrama, a British look and an American pace.”
Netflix’s Erik Barmack spoke of his delight at working with Bambu, adding “We’re huge fans of their work on ‘Gran Hotel’ and ‘Velvet’, epic romance that have been embraced by our members around the world. We’re certain that our members will love this unique and engaging drama created by some of the best storytellers in Spain.”
The show is due to begin filming in Spain this year, and is rumoured to be available internationally in 2017.
