The organisers want to hear from amateur and professional songwriters who can lead the UK to victory next year
The BBC has unveiled a nationwide competition to find the UK’s next Eurovision entry.
The broadcaster is working with partners to ensure the selection process will draw from amateur, professional or superstar musical talent.
“This year really will be the biggest song search for Eurovision the BBC has ever undertaken,” says Guy Freeman, Editor of Special Events for the BBC.
Anyone can submit a video of their song, providing that it is sung live by the artist who would perform the song in Sweden next year.
The BBC will work with partners the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors (BASCA) and Eurovision fan club the OGAE, with Innocent Records founder Hugh Goldsmith acting as Music Consultant to the BBC.
Following the initial selection process, a shortlist will be presented to a professional panel and the public, who will have the final say on who will represent the UK in the Eurovision Song Content in May.
The 2016 competition will be the 61st in Eurovision’s history, taking place in Sweden after Måns Zelmerlöw took home the trophy in Vienna this year.
The UK automatically qualifies for the Grand Final, alongside other members of the ‘Big Five’, Spain, Germany, France and Italy.
The closing date for submissions to the songwriting competition is Friday 20 November.
