BBC Television Centre closed at the end of March 2013 to enable a two year programme of recovery and renovation before a phased reopening starting in 2015.

The first phase tackles the removal of existing facilities and technology from this iconic building, with a hint of history and archaeology. The second phase is the re-birth of TVC as the home of BBC Worldwide and a new multi-user media, business and residential community.

Lynden Potter, Head of Technology Delivery, Major Projects, BBC, gives an insight into the work and its challenges, Andrew Wheeler, Decommissioning Lead, Major Projects, BBC, highlights the importance of retrieving and redistribution of kit, and Chris Kane, CEO BBC Commercial Projects, outlines the plans for the future.

Chris Kane: CEO BBC Commercial Projects

Chris Kane joined the BBC in January 2004 as Head of Corporate Real Estate. Under his leadership the Property department was restructured and re-launched as BBC Workplace. In this role, he was responsible for the development, financing and implementation of the BBC’s £2bn property strategy. In 2012, following the recent sale of BBC Television Centre to Stanhope plc, Chris transitioned to CEO, BBC Commercial Projects.  He is responsible for delivering the BBC pre-lets within the development and maximising the value of the sale to the BBC.  
Prior to joining the BBC, Chris was Vice-President of International Corporate Real Estate for the Walt Disney Company, where he managed Disney’s international portfolio.

Chris has an MBA from the Henley Management College, as well as a diploma in project management from the College of Estate Management and a BSc (hons) in surveying from Trinity College Dublin. He also holds a master’s in corporate real estate. He is a Fellow of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, and member of CoreNet Global, the Association of Project Managers and the Chartered Management Institute.

Lynden Potter: Head of Technology Delivery, Major Projects, BBC

Lynden has worked in technology projects for the BBC since joining in 2000. He was part of the team that delivered the technology into the BBC’s new and refurbished buildings in Salford and Central London, and is responsible for removing all the BBC’s technology dependencies on TVC.

Other projects being run by Lynden’s team include the technology fit-out for the BBC’s new HQ in Cardiff and facilities for major events and election coverage at BBC Elstree.

 

Andrew Wheeler: Technology Decommissioning Lead, TVC Closure

Andrew has worked on many technology projects in Broadcast and the Finance sectors, and in particular coordinated the on-site technology work during the build of MediaCity in Salford.

Andrew works in Lynden’s team and is responsible for decommissioning and disposal of equipment that has been taken out of service, including managing the auctions of redundant equipment.

 

Adrian Poole: Director of IT & Technology Delivery, BBC

Adrian Poole is the BBC’s Director of IT & Technology Delivery, his remit covers the delivery of all the new technology for the BBCs public Services, be they Enterprise IT or Broadcast systems, He is also responsible for the BBCs information security function.  More recently the Major Projects Infrastructure team came within his remit, and it is this team that are managing the programme of works currently underway at TVC.

Adrian is a Life long BBC’er, having worked for the corporation since 1986.
