We Are Lady Parts will return for a second series featuring Malala Yousafzai in a rare comedy cameo and comedy legend Meera Syal.
Written by screenwriter and director Nida Manzoor, the sitcom follows Muslim punk rock band Lady Parts as they strive to make a musical mark.
Series one saw the band – comprised of frontman Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey, Halycon Heights), bassist Bisma (Faith Omole, Endeavor) and drummer Ayesha (Juliette Motamed, Magic Mike’s Last Dance) – set out to find their lead guitarist.
Amina (Anjana Vasan, Killing Eve), a shy and stage fright-ridden girl (and the narrator of the series), fills the spot, but this causes minor rifts on the way to stardom.
Series two will focus on the lives of each band member and the individual challenges that face them. More original songs, written by Manzoor and her siblings, are in store, as as well as more covers, as the band reaches new levels of success.
There is no word on what form Syal (Goodness Gracious Me) and Malala’s cameos will take.
Manzoor says: “Making series one of We Are Lady Parts was immense for me. It was a trial by fire, but I found my voice, my style and my confidence in creating this show. Most importantly, I found my tribe - from actors and crew to producers and studio execs.
“So, coming to series two, I was galvanised. The characters, the world, the tone – it was all there, established, and ready to go. Now it was time to turn things up to eleven. I wanted to go bolder, sillier, darker, and deeper and that is exactly what we strived to do.”
We Are Lady Parts series two is coming to Channel 4 on 30 May 2024.
