Channel 4 has announced that Nida Manzoor’s musical comedy series We Are Lady Parts has been recommissioned for a second series.
Created, written, and directed by Nida Manzoor, the first series explored the trials and tribulations of the female punk rock band Lady Parts through the eyes of the geeky microbiology PhD student Amina Hussain (Anjana Vasan). Desperately seeking a husband, Amina is recruited to become the band’s unlikely lead guitarist by their enigmatic frontwoman Saira (Sarah Kameela Impey), who uses her hunt for love as leverage. As she quickly becomes swept up in the joyful anarchic energy and punk spirit of her bandmates, Amina finds herself torn between two worlds.
At series one’s conclusion, with the support of her fellow band members, Amina was finally able to take centre stage and overcome her vomit-inducing stage fright, to the joy of Lady Parts’ newly adoring fans.
Fiona McDermott, Head of Comedy, Channel 4, commented: “We Are Lady Parts is the rallying cry from a fearlessly funny, contemporary and dial-shifting comedy that felt uniquely Channel 4 at its heart. The show deftly took big ideas around identity, representation, gender and creativity and wrapped them up in a truly original and hilarious show full of love, romance and sisterly power.
Nida Manzoor added: “I feel so incredibly lucky and excited to have the opportunity to make a second series of We Are Lady Parts. I can’t wait to delve back into the world of the band and go deeper into their lives. Expect more high jinks, more music, and more flights of fancy. SPARTA!”
We Are Lady Parts took home three awards at the RTS Craft and Design Awards 2021 with wins for Robbie Morrison in Editing – Entertainment and Comedy, Claire Carter in Make Up Design – Entertainment and Non Drama, and Simon Walker for Production Design – Entertainment and Non Drama.
