How can True Crime producers balance good practice while still telling compelling, and often much-needed stories?
Whether it’s on TV, through a podcast, or sharing the latest viral social media video, the audience demand for true crime content is growing ever more rapidly, and with it, so do the ethical considerations for the producers behind the nation's most-watched investigations. At the heart of every new headline-making programme, Dahmer to The Staircase, Jimmy Savile to Amanda Knox, is a victim and a family, to say nothing of the countless people whose involvement in these tragedies amounts to far more than entertainment. How should producers navigate sensitivity, while avoiding self-censorship? Can true crime be a force to good, rather than just rubbernecking?
This session looks at how UK broadcasters and production companies can work together to incorporate better journalistic practices into true crime, examining the problems the genre must address, the challenge of regulating online content, whether that be TikTok, Snapchat, YouTube… or dare we say, Netflix, and the compliance documentation needed. Our panel of experts also examine how to protect contributors and stakeholders throughout the entire production process.
