The Royal Television Society West of England Awards in association with Evolutions Bristol took place on Sunday 23rd April at Bristol Old Vic with a gala ceremony hosted by actors Katherine Kelly and Joe Sims. The television community of the West of England turned out in force to celebrate their work over the last year.
Guests included the cast of The Outlaws- currently filming the third series in the city –actors Gamba Cole, Jessica Gunning, Clare Perkins and Rhianne Barreto, plus Tala Gouveia from ITV’s McDonald & Dodds and actress and comedian Sally Phillips.
Stephen Merchant’s comedy thriller The Outlaws won two awards for its second series, in Scripted and for Director John Butler. The judges commended the “sharp writing, fantastic performances and the seamless switch from comedy to drama.”
The Green Planet, BBC Natural History Unit’s series revealing the strange and wonderful world of plants won four awards, for Natural History, Cinematography, Sound and Editing. Narrated by Sir David Attenborough, it was hailed by the judges as “groundbreaking, innovative and brilliant - an important story about our world in these times of great change.”
Explorer and filmmaker Bertie Gregory impressed the judges to win On Screen Talent for his work on Epic Adventures with Bertie Gregory (Wildstar Films). The Factual award went to Trawlermen: Hunting the Catch (Frank Films), The Dog House (Five Mile Films) won in Factual Entertainment and Features and Drugsland: Going Country (Marble Films) championed in Documentary.
In News, Beth McLeod won in News Journalist for BBC England and Decoy, an ITV News West Country documentary about a 1970s covert operation to catch The Clifton Rapist won in News Story.
Lynn Barlow, Chair of RTS West of England and Assistant Vice-Chancellor Creative and Cultural Industries Engagement, UWE said “An amazing range of winners across all genres, proving the West Country's programme makers are at the top of their game."
