Adapted from Adam Kay’s memoir of the same name, the comedy drama sees Ben Whishaw play an on-screen version of Kay during his time as a junior doctor.

Whishaw is joined by Harriet Walter, who plays his mother Veronique, Alex Jennings, who plays his domineering boss Mr Lockhart, Rory Fleck Byrne, who plays his boyfriend Harry, Ambika Mod, who plays junior doctor Shruti, and Michele Austin, who plays Tracy a confident midwife and Kay’s professional rival.

Set on a labour ward, the series will show the highs and lows of being a junior doctor working 97-hour weeks and the constant pressures they face, all with a sharp-witted edge. 

House of the Dragon

Sky 

Based on George R.R. Martin’s Fire and Blood series, House of the Dragon takes place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones and focuses on the fearsome House of Targaryen. 

House of the Dragon will see the Targaryens fight over the line of succession, leading to a series of civil wars known as the Dance of the Dragons.

Emma D’Arcy plays Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, the king’s first-born child, born with pure Valyrian blood and a dragon rider. 

Paddy Considine plays King Viserys Targaryen, chosen by the lords of Westeros to succeed the Old King. 

Matt Smith plays Prince Daemon Targaryen, the younger brother of King Viserys and heir to the throne. 

Steve Toussaint plays Lord Corlys Velaryon, also known as The Sea Snake; he is Lord of House Velaryon, a Valyrian bloodline as old as House Targaryen.

Olivia Cooke plays Alicent Hightower, the daughter of Otto Hightower (Rhys Ifans), who is the Hand of the King, a loyal servant to the king and his realm.

Trigger Point

Uncovering the dangerous and painstaking work of the Metropolitan Police Bomb Disposal Squad, the ITV thriller looks at bomb disposal operatives known as Expos, who put their lives on the line every day. 

Vicky McClure plays frontline officer Lana Washington and Adrian Lester plays her colleague Joel Nutkins. Ex-military Washington and Nutkins are close friends after both serving time together in Afghanistan. 

When a potentially devastating terrorist campaign threatens the capital during the summer, the Expos are put front and centre to try and find out who is behind the bombings before fatalities rise even further. 

The Curse

Channel 4 

Set in London during the early 80s, crime comedy caper The Curse follows a group of hapless small-time crooks who can never get anything right, due to their own stupidity and poor judgement. 

The group have been friends since childhood and are normal working-class lads who partake in low level crime to make ends meet. 

Their naivety leads to them biting off more than they can chew and getting caught up in one of the biggest gold heists in history, leading to a story of trust, greed, ambition, class and inequality.

The 80s was a decade that saw a rise in armed robberies, as many people felt the rich were only getting richer, often at the expense of others.

The series stars Allan Mustafa as Albert Fantoni, Steve Stamp as Sidney Wilson, Hugo Chegwin as Phil ‘The Captain’ Pocket and Tom Davis as Big Mick Neville. 

And Then You Run

A close-knit group of four rebellious girls from London finds themselves on a spontaneous getaway to Rotterdam which descends into absolute chaos, including a race across Europe with three kilos of heroin and a gun in their luggage. 

The girls find themselves in serious danger when Tara (Leah McNamara) and her childhood friends, the reckless Stink (Vivian Oparah), clever Ruth (Yasmin Monet Prince) and timid Nessi (Isidora Fairhurst), are hunted by her uncle Reagan (Richard Coyle), a notorious gangster.

Reagan will stop at nothing to track down his missing drugs, but he isn’t the only one on the girls’ heels. A mythical serial killer known as ‘The Traveller’ is on a collision course with them all. 

The Lord of the Rings

Amazon Prime 

The long-awaited adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s magical world will focus on the Second Age, which is set thousands of years before the events of the Lord of the Rings books and The Hobbit. 

Currently the synopsis doesn’t reveal much, but Morfydd Clark has been cast as a young Galadriel, a very powerful elf. 

Simon Merrells is set to play an original character called Trevyn and Lenny Henry will play a breed of hobbit known as a Harfoot. 

Breaking from tradition, the series will be filmed in the UK instead of New Zealand.

SAS: Rogue Heroes

Steven Knight’s new drama tells the dramatic story of the formation of the Special Forces Unit, the SAS, during the darkest days of World War Two.

Starring Connor Swindells, Jack O’Connell, Alfie Allen, Sofia Boutella and Dominic West, the drama highlights the dangerous risks a group of renegade men took in extraordinary circumstances. 

In Cairo 1941, young officer David Stirling (Connor Swindells) created a radical plan to bring together the bravest, toughest and brightest soldiers to form a small undercover unit that would wreak havoc behind enemy lines.

Not just soldiers, but rebels, Stirling’s team were as complicated and reckless as they were bold and heroic. 

Django

A retelling of the classic Western, Matthias Schoenaerts takes on the role of the mysterious and daring gunslinger Django.

Set in the 1860s and 1870s, Django’s long-lost daughter Sarah (Lisa Vicari) has founded New Babylon with fiancé John (Nicholas Pinnock), a place full of outcasts and men and women from all backgrounds and races who live in harmony.

Haunted by the murder of his family years earlier, Django has been searching for his daughter ever since and is shocked to find her in New Babylon. 

Desperate to not lose his daughter twice, Django refuses to leave New Babylon fearing the city is in danger. 

Pam & Tommy

The biopic focuses on the lives of Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee (Sebastian Stan) and Baywatch actress and model Pamela Anderson (Lily James).

In 1995, the pair were headline news when they got married only four days after meeting and during their honeymoon made a sex tape, which was subsequently stolen and leaked on the internet. 

The leak led to a chaotic dispute, with Lee and Anderson suing the video disruption company Internet Entertainment Group. 

Their whirlwind marriage lasted three years, during which they continued to dominate tabloid headlines and have two children together.

The Midwich Cuckoos

A modern-day retelling of John Wyndham’s science fiction classic, The Midwich Cuckoos stars Keeley Hawes and Max Beesley. 

Midwich is a small commuter town where nothing ever happens. However, one day that all changes when in the twilight hours of a summer’s day, everyone within a certain radius falls unconscious. 

The strange occurrence would seem to be a one-off incident and everyone regains consciousness, but all the women of childbearing age have suddenly fallen pregnant. 

As the children of the curious phenomenon grow, it becomes obvious they are not strictly human.  

Inventing Anna

Based on a true story of Russian born Anna Sorokin, who rebranded herself as Anna Delvey, a wealthy German heiress who lied and conned her way into a life of luxury mixing with New York’s elite. 

The strange incident has been adapted into a limited series by Shonda Rhimes and will be told through the eyes of journalist Vivien (Anna Chlumsky), who tries to get to the bottom of the deceit. 

The pair form an intense love-hate relationship as Vivien tries to find out who the real Anna is.

No Return 

ITV            

A series that explores parental love, guilt, and issues around consent, No Return follows Kathy (Sheridan Smith), her husband Martin (Michael Jibson), their son Noah (Louis Ashbourne Serkis) and younger daughter Jessica (Lily Sutcliffe), on an idyllic all-inclusive luxury holiday in Turkey.

When Noah accepts a seemingly innocent beach party invitation from fellow holidaymaker Rosie (Jodie Campbell), who is staying at the same hotel, everyone’s lives begin to fall apart. 

Kathy and Martin are left to fight for their son’s freedom in what has turned into the holiday from hell. 

An arrest, an expensive and foreign legal system, intrusive media coverage and uncooperative fellow holidaymakers add to their horrific ordeal.                                                                                                 

The Gilded Age

Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellows heads to New York for his latest drama set in 1882, exploring a world on the brink of the modern age. 

Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) is the young, orphaned daughter of a Southern general and finds herself whisked away to New York to live with her old money aunts Agnes (Christine Baranski) and Ada (Cynthia Nixon). 

Brook soon becomes caught up in the social wars between the old money set and the exciting lives of her extremely rich neighbours.

As We See It

Three roommates on the autism spectrum explore life together as they try to find jobs, make friends and fall in love. 

Jack (Rick Gladdman), Harrison (Albert Rutecki) and Violet (Sue Ann Pien) try their best to navigate a world that often evades them. 

With the help of their aide Mandy (Sosie Bacon), their family and each other, the trio strive to find independence and acceptance. 

Obi Wan Kenobi

Ewan McGregor is back reprising his role as Obi Wan Kenobi alongside Hayden Christensen, who will return as Darth Vader, for this new Disney+ series. 

Set ten years after the conclusion of Revenge of the Sith, Kenobi is still suffering from the loss of his much loved apprentice Anakin Skywalker to the Sith.

Skywalker is now known as the evil and feared Darth Vader and serves the Galactic Empire. 

The rest of the cast includes Kumail Nanjiani, Moses Ingram and Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse as Beru and Owen Lars.

The series also promises to give viewers another lightsaber duel between Kenobi and Vader. 

Archive 81

Loosely based on the podcast of the same name, the supernatural horror series has an intense emotional romance at its core.

Archivist Dan Turner takes on the job of restoring antique videotapes from 1994 made by filmmaker Melody Pendras about her investigations into a dangerous cult. 

As Turner becomes drawn into Pendras’ story and obsessed with finding out what happened to her, the two form a mysterious connection. 

Through this connection, Turner becomes convinced he can save Pendras from the horrific end she met 25 years ago.
