Watched by around ten million viewers in its Sunday night slot and written by Heidi Thomas, Call the Midwife has been dubbed ‘game changing’, ‘worth the licence fee alone’ and  'the most subversive feminist drama on television’ by critics for its unflinching portrayal of women’s lives in the late 1950s, and has attracted record-beating audiences. Philippa Lowthorpe was recently awarded the RTS West of England award for Best Director (Drama) and the BAFTA for Best Director Fiction/Entertainment - she is the first woman to have won this award.

 

In this session, ‘Delivering the Director’s Cut’, Philippa, alongside editor David Thrasher will talk through the process of working together on this heartwarming hit, as well as some of their past projects, including Five Daughters, the multi award winning series for BBC One which recounted the stories of the five victims of the Ipswich serial murders. Thrasher won an RTS West of England award for editing on the drama in 2011. They will deconstruct a number of key scenes to analyse how the director and editor can successfully collaborate.

 

Philippa began her career making authored documentaries including Three Salons at the Seaside (RTS nominated), Remember The Family and A Childhood which led to her being awarded the prize for Creative Originality by WIFTV in 2002. She adapted and directed The Other Boleyn Girl for BBC Films. 

 

David Thrasher studied Film Production at Southern Illinois University before joining the BBC and working on a variety of content including dramas and documentaries. David now concentrates on film and television drama and his body of work includes Case Histories, Silent Witness, Waking the Dead and The Best of Men.

 

‘Delivering the Director’s Cut’ will take place at 7.30pm (doors open 7pm) on Monday 10th June at The Wickham Theatre, Drama Department, University of Bristol, Cantocks Close. Mark Cosgrove, Head of Programme at Watershed will chair the Q&A.
