A Very British Scandal
BBC One, 9pm
Starring Claire Foy and Paul Bettany, this series of A Very British Scandal tells the story of the tumultuous divorce of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll and the unprecedented media frenzy that accompanied it.
Written by Sarah Phelps, the series is set in the 1960s and was described as one of the 20th century’s most brutal and shocking legal cases, full of scandalous photographs and shocking testimonies.
Margaret, Duchess of Argyll (Claire Foy), was known for her beauty and charisma, but during her divorce to the Duke of Argyll (Paul Bettany), she was vilified by her contemporaries and the press.
The series explores the social and political landscape of post-war Britain and the attitudes towards women, which often had an undercurrent of institutional misogyny.
