The 2021 RTS bursary scholarship scheme now open for applications, with all programmes open for application until 30 September 2021.
Recruiting its eighth intake of Television Production and Journalism bursary scholars, with the schemes running since 2014, the RTS hopes to award 35 scholarships to individuals studying Television Production or related subjects, with an additional 10 scholarships for the Technology Bursary.
The RTS’ Technology bursary supports young people from lower income backgrounds who are interested in working in a range of technology roles, anywhere from software development to robotics. This year, the RTS is recruiting its seventh cohort of Technology bursary scholars and students studying Computer Science, Engineering, Maths or Physics can apply, however the RTS is open to considering applications from other related courses.
“We are really looking forward to welcoming another band of talented, determined and enthusiastic students,” said Theresa Wise, CEO of the Royal Television Society.
“All of the students we support come from low-income households and demonstrate an impressive work ethic, as well as bringing new voices and life experiences into the media industry. We take a very flexible approach to the courses we will support as the industry has so many different roles – from director to location scout, set designer or costume maker.”
The RTS bursary scholarship scheme has grown significantly over the past seven years and attracts widespread industry support in the form of donations to support bursaries and in-kind support such as mentoring, providing webinar sessions for students during lockdown, and offering internships and work experience.
Donations to support the scheme from STV, All3Media, Disney and YouView have enabled the scheme to grow and flourish. The mentors provide unparalleled support to the students, providing insight and motivation for students during the current pandemic.
