Claudia Winkleman will return to find more of the UK’s top pianists, joined by judges pop sensation Mika and classical pianist Lang Lang.
Channel 4 has commissioned two new series of The Piano, this time with seven episodes instead of five. Like series one, each episode will feature one public piano in the UK and some of Britain’s best undiscovered virtuosos.
Series one’s stand-out performer was the 13-year-old blind and neurodivergent Lucy. Since captivating the nation, she has gone on to play at the coronation concert in front of royalty.
Her incredible talent will be explored further in a newly commissioned documentary. Lucy struggles to communicate with others due to her autism, and her piano playing is how she expresses herself and connects with the outside world. The documentary will unpack this and explore her relationship with her piano teacher, who also featured in The Piano series one.
Alongside the new series, viewers will also receive a Christmas special, where some of series one’s most memorable pianists will return to serenade King’s Cross commuters with festive numbers. Claudia Winkelman will be on hand to inject some Christmas spirit with some secret Santa surprises, while Mika and Lang Lang will be watching the performances, and preparing to deliver some presents of their own.
Channel 4’s Chief Creative Officer Ian Katz says: “In a world full of wannabes seeking their moment in the limelight, The Piano was a breath of fresh air. It celebrated ordinary people doing something extraordinary for the sheer love of it.
"From the 94-year-old widower who played in Glasgow station to find company, to Lucy, the remarkable 13-year-old who stole the ‘nations hearts’. It took viewers on a remarkable emotional roller coaster and I’m delighted that it will be coming back from more British stations, next year.”
The Piano series two is expected to air on Channel 4 in 2024.
