The newly released trailer for Only Murders in the Building series four sees Eva Longoria, Zach Galifianakis and Molly Shannon join the series.

For series one, Steve Martin and Martin Short reunited from their Father of the Bride days as Charles Hayden-Savage and Oliver Putnam. Both were past their hay day, with Charles gripping onto his time playing a celebrated TV detective, and Oliver in denial that his job as a theatre director is no longer paying the bills.

When a murder takes place in their apartment building (see what they did there?), Charles and Oliver found themselves bonding over a mutual love for true crime podcasts, alongside their mysterious fellow resident Mable Mora (Selena Gomez, Wizards of Waverly Place). When the murder is instantly ruled a suicide, the three chose to do some investigating for themselves, starting their podcast Only Murders in the Building.

After three series of the podcast, Only Murders is stepping outside of the building and into LA, as a big budget film studio is making an adaption of the pod. Once in the city of stars they meet the actors playing them – Eugene Levy (Schitt’s Creek) as Charles Hayden-Savage, Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives) as Mable Mora, and Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover) as Oliver Putnam. The actors (who are playing themselves playing the podcasters, it’s all very meta) get to work on character studies, much to the three’s mild annoyance.

Although it might be all sunshine, celebrities and rainbows in the hills, they’ve left a much darker mystery at home – who killed Sazz (Jane Lynch, Glee), Charles’ old stunt double at the close of series three. Fans of Sazz will be happy to know this doesn’t mean we’ve seen the last of her, as Lynch will reportedly return for flashbacks.

As the pile of suspects mounts, it begins to surface that the killer's target may not have been Sazz after all, but rather Charles. This pushes them to a “safe house”, Charles’ sister’s (Melissa McCarthy, Gilmore Girls) place in Long Island. It appears there may have been a reason for their estrangement: she’s got a fair few creepy dolls and is obsessed with Oliver’s podcast voice.

Whilst Meryl Streep (The Devil Wears Prada) will be making a reappearance as Oliver’s girlfriend Loretta, Mable’s newest flame (Jesse Williams, Grey’s Anatomy) will not be returning for series four, continuing Mable’s trend of having a different love interest every series. With past partners including a trauma bonded childhood friend (Aaron Dominquez, The Inspection), an art gallery owner with no real sense of boundaries (Cara Delevingne, Paper Towns) and a man named ‘Tobert’ (Williams), who knows who she will meet in series four.

There have been some rumours that Paul Rudd will also be returning to the series, which, bearing in mind his character Ben Glenroy was very, very dead by the end of series three, is quite surprising.

Only Murders in the Building will air weekly on Disney+ from 27 August 2024.
