The BBC has announced the cast for Michael Sheen, James Graham and Adam Curtis' new "ambitious, powerful and surprising" political drama, The Way.

The Wales-based producer Red Seam has just begun filming the three-part series in Port Talbot, Wales. Graham wrote the story, which follows an ordinary family, The Driscolls, caught up in a civil uprising that ripples out from their small, industrial hometown of Port Talbot.

As well as directing the series, Michael Sheen will lead alongside Steffan Rhodri (Steeltown Murders), Mali Harries (Keeping Faith), Sophie Melville (The Pact) and Callum Scott Howells (It's A Sin) as the Driscoll family. Maja Laskowska (Trigonometry) will star as the young woman entangled in the family's escape.

With Graham, the renowned documentary filmmaker and political thinker Curtis (Hypernormalisation, Can't Get You Out Of My Head) co-created The Way, which "taps into the social and political chaos of today's world."

As they attempt to flee the unrest, The Driscolls are apparently forced to escape their country along with the certainties of their old lives. In what sounds like a line from one of Curtis' documentaries, the synopsis reads: "Will they be overwhelmed by their memories of the past, or will they lay their ghosts to rest and take the risk of an unknown future?"

Director, co-creator and executive producer Sheen says: “I feel very lucky to get to work every day with these phenomenal actors. We’ve always had so much acting talent here in Wales and I’m very grateful to have the opportunity to tell this extraordinary story with the very best at work today.”

A release date is yet to be set, but The Way will air on BBC One and iPlayer.
