The BBC has released first look images for James Graham, Michael Sheen and Adam Curtis' new drama about a Welsh civil uprising, The Way.
Across three parts, Graham has written an "emotional and darkly humorous" story that taps into the social and political chaos of today by imagining a civil uprising that ripples out from a small industrial town.
Following the uprising, a local family, the Driscolls, are forced to flee their home country and abandon the certainties of their old lives. But, the synopsis asks, "will they be overwhelmed by their memories of the past, or will they lay their ghosts to rest and take the risk of an unknown future?"
Steffan Rhodri (Steeltown Murders), Mali Harries (Keeping Faith), Sophie Melville (The Pact), Callum Scott Howells (It's A Sin) and Michael Sheen (Staged) lead the cast as the family in question, and Maja Laskowska (Trigonometry) as the young woman caught up in their escape.
All can be seen in the images, with Howells and Rhodri's characters seeming to take leading and fiery roles in the protests. Picket signs for their movement read "We Are One."
Luke Evans' (Nine Perfect Strangers) casting hints at a potentially violent plot point, as he stars as Hogwood, a "mercenary in pursuit of the Driscolls."
Tom Cullen (The Gold), Danny Sapani (Killing Eve), Mark Lewis Jones (Outlander), Paul Rhys (Discovery of Witches), Erin Richards (The Crown), Aneurin Barnard (The Catch), Catherine Ayers (The Light in the Hall), Patrick Baladi (Breeders), Georgia Tennant (Staged), Jonathan Nefydd (Pobol y Cwm), and Matthew Aubrey (World on Fire) will all play key roles across the series. Child actor Teilo James Le Masurier will make his debut as Rhys, the Driscolls' 4-year-old grandson.
The Way will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in 2024.
