Channel 4 has announced the cast for a new eight-part crime thriller, Suspect (w/t).

The series, adapted from Christoffer Boe’s Danish series Forhøret, will star James Nesbitt (Bloodlands), Joely Richardson (The Tudors), Anne-Marie Duff (Sex Education), Richard E. Grant (Loki), Ben Miller (Bridgerton), Niamh Algar (Deceit), Antonia Thomas (The Good Doctor), Sacha Dhawan (The Great), Sam Heughan (Outlander) and Imogen King (Clique).

Suspect follows veteran detective Danny Frater (Nesbitt) who gets a devastating shock when his routine ID check at the hospital mortuary is upended by the discovery that his estranged daughter, Christina (King), is the deceased young woman in the morgue.

With the post-mortem report revealing that Christina took her own life, Danny is left traumatized by the news. Despite the strained and complicated father-daughter relationship the pair had in recent years, he refuses to believe that Christina would have ended her own life. He sets out on an agonising crusade, retracing his daughter’s last days and hours, in the hope of discovering what really happened to his only child.

Through a series of tense exchanges with those closest to Christina, including her partner, Nicola (Algar), her best friend, Maia (Thomas), her business partner, Jaisal (Dhawan), her godfather, Ryan (Heughan), her mentor, Harry (Grant), and finally her mother and Danny’s ex-wife, Susannah (Duff), the detective soon learns of his daughter’s descent into delinquency.

As he struggles through a mass of contradictory testimony and circumstantial evidence, Danny is forced to confront his own failings as a father before deciding who, if anyone, is responsible for Christina’s death.

James Nesbitt commented: "I could relate to Danny, with his flaws, vulnerabilities and the devastating situation he faces, from the very first moment I picked up the script.

“Each episode of Suspect (w/t) is an intensely theatrical double-hander, a psychological battle of wits between Danny and another character who may know something about his daughter's untimely death, and I really can't wait to lock horns with my fellow cast members and to lead this incredible array of acting talent."
