Sky has announced a new legal thriller spanning Bristol and Jamaica, starring Gugu Mbatha-Raw.
Mbatha-Raw stars as Claudia, an up and coming lawyer who’s tasked with challenging an intriguing inheritance claim.
A local Bristolian called Cudjoe East (Sheldon Shepherd) has filed the claim against one Oliver Connaught (Jonny Lee-Miller), contesting the white aristocrat’s sizeable estate.
Claudia journeys to Jamaica to investigate, only to find out that the haunted house intruding on her dreams is the Connaught family’s real-life plantation, Hope Hill. Together with Oliver, she finds herself drawing a disturbing connection between the historic horrors of colonialism and present-day injustices.
Writer and actor Karla Crome (Am I Being Unreasonable) has written the five-part series, based on an original idea by Jefferson Bannis. Storm Saulter (Better Mus’ Come) will direct.
Crome said: “It is a privilege to see Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Jonny Lee Miller, Sheldon Shepherd and Bel Powley bringing my characters to life under Storm Saulter’s evocative direction and I can’t wait to share our work with audiences.”
The series also stars Bel Powley (A Small Light) as Charlotte, Nadean Rawlins (Bob Marley: One Love) as Mercy, Sean Gilder (Mary & George) as Tom McKenzie, Olunike Adeliyi (The Fire Inside) as Patsy Dawkins, Richard Dillane (Wolf Hall) as Eugene Desfrienes, Diveen Henry (The Day of the Jackal) as Flora, Jack Bandeira (Happy Valley) as Kenneth Connaught and Shantol Jackson (Sprinter) as Sarah.
Inheritance begins filming in the UK and Jamaica this month.
