Everything I Know About Love writer Dolly Alderton will be teaming up with Heartstopper director Euros Lyn for Netflix’s newest Jane Austen adaptation, alongside leading actors Emma Corrin and Jack Lowden.
It’s a truth universally acknowledged that once a decade Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice gets a remake. From BBC’s 1995 mini-series to Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, Jane Austen’s 1813 novel has been reimagined countless times.
It's also had just as many Mr Darcys. Slow Horses’ Jack Lowden will become the latest to embody Derbyshire’s most eligible bachelor. Playing opposite him as headstrong Elizabeth Bennet will be Emma Corrin, who is no stranger to period drama, between their role in Lady Chatterley’s Lover and the recent Black Mirror episode Hotel Reverie.
Also joining the cast as the Bennet sisters’ overbearing mother is Olivia Colman (The Crown), a role that is often placed as the comedic relief due to her chaotic attempts at matchmaking her five daughters.
Further casting is yet to be announced for Elizabeth’s sisters, Jane, Mary, Kitty and Lydia, and father Mr Bennet.
Alderton says: “Once in a generation, a group of people get to retell this wonderful story and I feel very lucky that I get to be a part of it. Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice is the blueprint for romantic comedy - it has been a joy to delve back into its pages to find both familiar and fresh ways of bringing this beloved book to life.
“The book is a gift to adapt - packed with drama and depth as well as comedy and charm. In it lies the opportunity to examine the complexities of love, family, friendship and society, while aspiring to Austen’s delightfully observational voice. With Euros Lyn directing our stellar cast, I am so excited to reintroduce these hilarious and complicated characters to those who count Pride and Prejudice as their favourite book, and those who are yet to meet their Lizzie and Mr Darcy.”
Corrin, who will also act as Executive Producer for the series, adds: “Playing Elizabeth Bennet is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. To be able to bring this iconic character to life, alongside Olivia and Jack, with Dolly’s phenomenal scripts, is truly the greatest honour. I can’t wait for a new generation to fall in love with this story all over again.”
There is no release date for Netflix’s Pride and Prejudice currently set.
