Channel 4 has released a first look image from Jack Thorne (His Dark Materials) and Marc Munden’s (Utopia) new feature-length drama Help, starring Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) and Stephen Graham (The Irishman).
Set in a fictional care home in Liverpool, Help tells the poignant story of the relationship between a young care worker (Comer) and a patient (Graham), whose lives are irrevocably changed by the coronavirus pandemic in spring 2020.
Jodie Comer plays Sarah, a smart young woman who has never felt like she fitted in at school or at work. Despite her family telling her she’d never amount to anything, she finds her calling unexpectedly as a carer at Bright Sky Homes and can effortlessly form special connections with residents.
One such resident is 47-year-old Tony (Stephen Graham), a man suffering with Young Onset Alzheimer’s who is prone to bouts of confusion and violent outbursts as his mind deteriorates. While other staff members are unable to handle him, Sarah begins to build a real bond with Tony. Her success at managing him helps rebuild her confidence and sense of self-belief.
But just as everything seems to be looking up, the coronavirus pandemic hits in March 2020 and devastates everything Sarah has built. Alongside her colleagues, she works tirelessly to protect those in her care despite being ill-equipped and poorly prepared.
Going to extraordinary lengths to look after those whose conditions make their suffering and isolation all the more traumatic, the staff at Bright Sky Homes show unwavering commitment and compassion, but their heroic efforts can only do so much, and Sarah is pushed into a dark corner, desperately seeking a way out.
Help is coming soon to Channel 4 and All 4.
