In 2014 we awarded our first ever bursaries to 20 undergraduate students. See how some of them got on in their first year and what the bursary has helped them do so far by watching video diaries of their final terms.

The Royal Television Society is committed to supporting UK undergraduates who wish to pursue a career in television. Our Television Production and Broadcast Journalism Undergraduate Bursary scheme offers 20 awards to undergraduates from lower income backgrounds planning on studying at Creative Skillset-accredited universities.

Kyle Sheils

Kyle is studying Broadcast Journalism at the University of Leeds. Ever since he can remember he's wanted to make television, becoming hooked at school in South Africa when he was asked to research, write and present the "News at 8" for a project. Whether in-front or behind the camera, he's always wanted to be involved in what we see on our screens and he hopes this course will one day help him achieve this goal.

Emma Jane Wheeler

Emma's first interest in a TV career began in college, where she studied Film for A-Level. Now studying TV production at university, she hopes one day to become a scriptwriter, "though at the moment, my course allows me to explore many different areas of the creative industries, so things could change!"

Suzanne Pearson

Suzanne first fell in love with television watching David Attenborough documentaries and became interested in creative storytelling when she watched Edward Scissorhands at the age of 8. "This was when I began to realize that the possibility of being in such a creative industry wasn't just for Hollywood but for normal people, so from here on out I told everyone I wanted to be a director." Now at university, Suzanne is keeping her options open but aspires ultimately to produce or direct a TV series.

Kayleigh Jones

Kayleigh was first inspired to pursue a journalism career after undergoing work experience at BBC Wales. She is currently studying Journalism at the University of Gloucestershire and hopes to break into the broadcast journalism industry either behind the scenes or presenting on camera.

Hannah Hook

Growing up Hannah loved Drama lessons at school and, through experimenting with her creativity, realised her passion lay with television production. She is now studying Television and Film Production at the University of York where she's still deciding what path to take in TV. "Each day I am learning and experiencing new things to push myself to success in whatever I wish to achieve."

Tom Stone

About to go into his second year at Bournemouth University studying Television Production. Over the past year he has been training for a 1400 mile charity bike ride called Rome to Home. He has also been working on two short films, one which was executive produced by RTS winner Idris Elba. He is going to use the bursary money for equipment and/or travel expenses for his own films.

Ophelia Taylor

Ophelia is now in her second year at the University of Westminster. She ended her first year with an intensive four part drama called The Plays The Thing which took two weeks to film and says its great to see how far she's come from freshers to now.

Dean Massey

Dean has directed his own studio production, photographed an ex-X Factor contestant and has just filmed a black tie award ceremony. He has used the money for a number of things including using it to pay for travel expenses to go to shoots.

Emma Duncan

Receiving the bursary helped Emma write books which she wouldn't have been able to buy without. At the end of August she went to the Edinburgh TV Festival which she hugely thankful for the RTS for.
