Channel 4 has confirmed that Big Boys, Jack Rooke’s RTS Award-winning comedy drama, will return for a third series.

The hilarious and heartfelt Big Boys follows the unlikely friendship of the sensitive and newly-out Jack, and boisterous lad’s lad Danny, played by Dylan Llewellyn and Jon Pointing.

It’s a powerful, underrepresented, mutually-supportive friendship. So far Danny has helped Jack come out of his shell, come to terms with his grief for his late father, and embrace his newfound sexuality. In turn Jack has held Danny’s hand through his depression, and, with his mum Peggy (Camille Coduri), welcomed him to the family he never had.

However, in the upcoming series, adult life looms large in the boys' minds, and their friendship will be tested like never before.

The series will reunite the wider gang as they head into final year at Brent Uni, including Katy Wix as bumbling student union officer Jules, Izuka Hoyle as the studious Corinne, Olisa Odele as the self-assured fashionista Yemi. Together they’ll have to balance their work load with the emotional load of their dating lives – and, in Jack’s case, Louis Walsh’s departure from The X Factor.

Meanwhile, Peggy and her bubbly best mate Shannon (Harriett Webb) will apparently kindle new flames, which could mean Peggy will continue pursuing the cabby she met in series two. But the baby Shannon conceived with her loveable ASOS delivery driver will keep them busy with endless nappies to change.

Rooke said: “It’s been 10 years since I actually graduated uni and now yet again I’m returning to my campus with a clapperboard and film crew to recreate the embarrassing endeavours of my youth. It is just a dream job!

“The response to series two has been beautiful and we’re so grateful this show continues to connect with and get discovered by so many weird and wonderful viewers. Big Boys is the closest I’ll ever feel to being in a girl band and we’re all desperate to come back like a pack of rabid dogs and put on a sexy, cringey, big funny show for you all!”

It is yet to be confirmed whether Diane, the retired school teacher turned reality show queen of The Traitors, will star as an exam invigilator. Although, as well as outlining his plans to equip her character with a “reusable mug full of fizzy rosé,” Rooke also told the RTS at this year’s Programme Awards that she had “provisionally said yes.”

Channel 4 has promised some “shocks and surprises” in the coming series, so an appearance from Mother might well be one of them.
