BBC Two has released several new images of its upcoming drama series The North Water, adapted and directed by Andrew Haigh.
The gallery includes photos of Colin Farrell as Henry Drax, Jack O’Connell as Patrick Sumner, Stephen Graham as Captain Brownlee and Tom Courtenay as Baxter. The series also stars Peter Mullan, Sam Spruell and Roland Møller.
Set in Hull and the ice floes of the Arctic in the 1850s, most of the location shooting took place in the Arctic, with cast and crew sailing as far as 81 degrees north, which is claimed to be the furthest point north any television drama has ever been filmed.
Adapted from Ian McGuire’s novel of the same name, the five-part series follows the disgraced ex-army surgeon, Sumner, who finds employment on a whaling expedition to the Arctic as the ship doctor. Sumner soon finds he has to battle both his violent crew mates and the elements.
Among them is Drax, a harpooner and brutal killer forged by the harshness of his world.
As the true purpose of the voyage comes to light, Sumner and Drax come to blows, and the fallout takes them far from solid ground and the safety of civilisation.
The North Water will air on BBC Two in autumn 2021.
