Universities

Although specific qualifications are not necessary for a career in television, there are numerous undergraduate and post-graduate courses available in all aspects of the television industry, including both pre-production and post-production.

University degrees are obtainable in many areas of the television industry, including animation, screenwriting, filmmaking, producing, directing, engineering, cinematography, digital effects, editing, production design and production management.

The Royal Television Society offers 40 bursaries to undergraduates from lower income backgrounds who wish to break into the television industry, as well as work experience and placement opportunities. Bursary applications are also open to students studying computing or engineering who are interested in the technical aspects of the industry.

University students have the chance to put forward work they create during their studies for a chance to win an RTS Student Television Award, which recognises outstanding audiovisual work by undergraduate and postgraduate students across the UK.
