S4C is the only Welsh language television channel in the world. As a public service broadcaster, it commissions independent producers from across Wales to make the majority of its programmes. ITV Cymru Wales is also commissioned to produce programmes. BBC Cymru Wales provides around 10 hours of programming per week for S4C, including the news and daily soap Pobol y Cwm, funded out of the licence fee.
S4C provides a wholly Welsh language television and online service from seven every morning until late at night, seven days a week.
Within one television channel S4C provides a comprehensive service of Welsh language content across a wide range of genres for all sections of the community in Wales – in terms of linguistic ability, age and social demographic.
S4C aims to provide a service that reflects the diversity within society in Wales and within the Welsh speaking audience.
S4C is a publisher–broadcaster commissioning over 2,000 hours of original content each year from the independent production sector, which is broadcast together with at least 520 hours made for the service by BBC Cymru.
S4C’s aim is to be available to everybody in Wales, for the Welsh diaspora across the UK, and where possible on a worldwide basis. S4C seeks to reach the widest possible audience by offering optional English-language subtitling and, occasionally, an optional Englishlanguage audio track.
S4C’s Service is available on Freeview across Wales and also on the Sky, Freesat, Virgin Media and YouView platforms across the UK. S4C’s online service, Clic is also available throughout the UK and, where rights permit, its content is available on a worldwide basis.
S4C’s content has also been available on iPlayer since October 2014 as well as on YouView and YouTube.
S4C’s aim is to deliver content and media services in the Welsh language that provide entertainment, information and inspiration, that places S4C at the centre of the everyday lives of the people of Wales and makes a progressive and key contribution to Wales and the Welsh language.
