Through lockdown and even before, True Crime as a genre has boomed in popularity like never before.

From Netflix trailblazers Making A Murderer, Don’t F**k with Cats and Night Stalker, and ITV’s true crime dramas such as The Pembrokeshire Murders and latterly Stephen, to Des, Manhunt and the upcoming Social Media Murders, audiences are more transfixed than ever by the twists and turns of complex murder investigations and the quirks of fate and happenstance by which normal, everyday lives can be transformed, in the blink of an eye, to tragedy.

As CrimeCon - a weekend devoted to True Crime in all its guises, sponsored by Crime+Investigation Channel – launches in the UK for the first time, this session will look at what it takes to produce a True Crime series; what producers and broadcasters have to consider when dealing with real lives torn asunder by such tragic events? And what makes it such an enduringly popular genre with viewers in the UK and worldwide.

True Crime brings together a fantastic panel of experts, producers and commissioners to discuss the genre's enduring success.

  • Jo Clinton Davis, Controller of Popular Factual for ITV and commissioner of shows including An Hour to Catch a Killer with Trevor Mcdonald.and the Crime and Punishment strand
  • Helen Tonge, Managing Director & Executive Producer of Manchester based production company. Title Role TV,  producer of Crimes That Shook Britain
  • Peter Bleksley, Ex-detective, best known as ‘The Chief’, the star of Channel 4’s hit shows Hunted and Celebrity Hunted
  • Dr Sohom Das, consultant psychiatrist and contributor to the upcoming Murdertown with Anita Rani on Crime & Investigation
  • Chair: Boyd Hilton, Entertainment Director Heat Magazine, Deputy Editor @PilotTVmag, TV & films reviewer and critic.
